South by Southwest (March) is the single biggest disruptor to Austin’s event calendar — and its reach extends far beyond the festival itself. Many tech and media companies deliberately schedule their sales kickoffs and company kickoffs in Austin in the weeks around SXSW to capitalise on the city’s energy, which means venue competition is intense from February through to mid-March. Hotel rates during this period regularly reach three to four times their normal level, and many properties require minimum stay commitments. Even events planned for late February or early April can feel the ripple effects.
